There is a new photo gallery in our Photo section. Mark Ovaska -is a photojournalist who has worked for many well known publications including the Wall St. Journal. He has been working on a series of photos documenting the effect of gas drilling on the land and people of the Marcellus Shale region. His galleries are full of illuminating images.
A Chesapeake well site caught fire on July 13th. Story 1 Story 2
DEP's inspection records are very difficult to navigate. I've written a script which assembles Susquehanna, Lycoming, Potter, Wayne counties. The scrolling violations in the left sidebar are in Susquehanna County, from the 2nd quarter of 2010. To ask for other specific counties, please contact me. Techies, view details here.

On Jan. 19, 2010, Laser Marcellus filed for a certificate of public convenience to begin to offer gathering and transporting or conveying service by pipeline to the public in the Townships of Apolacon, Choconut, Forest Lake, Great Bend, Jessup, Liberty, Middletown and New Milford in Susquehanna County. The company has applied to be a public utility under the Public Utility Code, Title 66 of Pennsylvania's Consolidated Statues.
The Times Tribune has completed a six-month investigation of natural gas drilling in our area. Visit their Marcellus Shale section for links to the articles, drilling news, and more.
The investigation found: There have been hundreds of spills at natural gas well sites in the commonwealth over the last five years, the vast majority of which have never been publicized by the DEP. The massive effort to exploit the shale has left an indelible mark on the landscape and communities in the state's Northern Tier and southwestern region, bearing both economic benefits and environmental costs. Experiences in those regions offer a preview of gas development in the seven counties of Northeast Pennsylvania, where a dozen Marcellus Shale operators hold leases to drill. Despite industry claims that it discloses all of the chemicals it uses in the gas extraction process, DEP documents from a series of spills in Susquehanna County show that the industry's disclosure is incomplete and insufficient for determining contamination in soil and water. A growing chorus of scientists is arguing that not enough is known about the effect widespread gas drilling will have on water supplies, air quality and human health to justify the intensive development of the resource already taking place.
The investigation found:
All information on wells, permits, etc. is posted on Pennsylvania's eMapPA system. Unfortunately, it is VERY difficult to use. Here are some directions--first for eFACTS (also works for eNOTICE emails), then for using the system directly.
You have until Monday, June 29th to comment on a list of exemptions from air quality permits that the Department of Environmental Protection is re-proposing. This includes some types of oil and gas exploration and production operations. View the list here. Note: this is the link provided by DEP. It doesn't look like it's been updated since 2003???
For additional information contact Jeanette Van Skike, Division of Permits, Bureau of Air Quality, 12th Floor, Rachel Carson State Office Building, P.O. Box 8468, Harrisburg, PA 17105-8468, telephone 717-787-4325, or send email to: jvanskike@state.pa.us.
Gasland, award-winning documentary about natural gas drilling featuring Dimock, had two sold out pre-release screenings in Montrose on June 8th at the Montrose Theatre. If you didn't catch it, it premieres on HBO June 21, and other screenings are being held nearby and around the country.
The screenings were hosted by the Susquehanna County Green Party, Susq. Co. Citizens for Clean Water, Susq. Co. Gas Forum, and NEPAGasAction. Filmmaker Josh Fox led a panel Q&A after the screenings. Nadia Steinzor, the new Earth Works Oil & Gas Accountability Project (OGAP) Marcellus Shale Organizer for our area, also introduced herself and talked about OGAP's work.
The Susquehanna County Library has purchased a subscription to the permit information and maps available at RLStore.com. The site includes daily updates on permits pending and approved, maps of each township with well locations (much more useful than the PA eMAP program), as well as other information. The subscription can only be used in a library building (Forest City, Hallstead-Great Bend, Montrose, and Susquehanna). You can bring a wireless laptop, or use the library computers. The link goes to the Susquehanna County page, but the subscription also includes Bradford, Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Fayette, Greene, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Potter, Somerset, Sullivan, Tioga, Wayne, and Wyoming.
